Throughout the school year, students participate in assessments such as NWEA MAP Growth, ASVAB and DIBELS. These assessments are important tools that help teachers better understand each student's individual learning needs and growth over time.
NWEA MAP Growth helps measure student achievement and growth in areas such as reading and mathematics. Because the assessment adjusts to each student's responses, it provides teachers with information about what students are ready to learn next.
DIBELS assessments focus primarily on early literacy skills. They help teachers identify students' strengths and determine whether additional support may be needed in areas such as letter recognition, reading fluency, and other foundational reading skills.
ASVAB testing is given to juniors at BHS.
The ASVAB stands for Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. It is a multiple-choice test used by the U.S. military to help determine a person's strengths and aptitude for different career fields.
What does the ASVAB measure?
The test includes areas such as:
- Math knowledge
- Arithmetic reasoning
- Reading and word knowledge
- Science
- Electronics
- Mechanical comprehension
- Automotive and shop information
- Computer and technical knowledge
Is the ASVAB only for students joining the military?
No. While the ASVAB is required for students who want to enlist in the military, many high schools offer the ASVAB Career Exploration Program as a career-planning tool.
It is important for students and parents to remember that these assessments are not about earning a grade or comparing students to one another. Instead, they provide valuable information that helps teachers make instructional decisions and provide the support students need to continue growing.
How Parents Can Help
Parents can help create a positive testing experience by:
- Making sure their child gets a good night's sleep before testing.
- Providing a healthy breakfast or ensuring their child has an opportunity to eat in the morning.
- Making sure their child arrives at school on time.
- Encouraging their child to do their best without creating unnecessary pressure.
- Reminding them that it is okay if they do not know every answer—the goal is simply to show what they know and where they are ready to grow.
With encouragement and support from both home and school, students can approach testing with confidence and give their best effort. The information gained from MAP and DIBELS assessments helps us work together to support every student's continued success.
