TeamMates Information Meeting Scheduled for Burwell

by Ronda Weber

October 04, 2011

Burwell is interested in joining communities across Iowa, Nebraska, and California in an effort to provide mentors for youth in grades three through twelve through the school-based TeamMates Mentoring Program.  “Mentoring is making an investment in the future of the youth in the community”, said Regional Coordinator, Sue Kennedy, “the community will gain a better understanding of TeamMates by attending this meeting, their support will be important to the success of the program.

Superintendent Dan Bird has this to say about the TeamMates Mentoring Program:  “Burwell Public Schools has such a rich tradition of providing opportunities that enable students to excel and reach their full potential.  The TeamMates Mentoring Program will provide our students the opportunity to connect with a mentor from the community and to blend their strengths to help our students become more productive citizens.  I am excited at the many opportunities the TeamMates Program will provide for our students.”

Burwell schools will be hosting an informational session about TeamMates for everyone in the community on October 20th at 7:00 p.m. at the Burwell High School library. The public is invited to learn about the mentoring program.

The TeamMates Mentoring Program was founded in 1991 by Tom and Nancy Osborne to provide support and encouragement to youth.   TeamMates Mentors provide a sense of hope and vision to young people.  Today, over 5,000 youth are being mentored one hour per week at their local school by adult volunteers.
