February 10, 2025
The Burwell Longhorns won the 2025 Class D State Dual Wrestling Championship on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney. The Longhorns entered the tournament as the top seed in Class D but faced some extremely tough competition in their battle for the trophy. They cruised past Loomis High School in the opening round, 52-27, before facing 4-time returning state champions, Aquinas Catholic in the semi finals. Burwell squeaked by with a 37-33 victory. The finals set Burwell up against a very tough Central Valley team. Four straight wins from Drew Dawe, Austin Mayfield, Cort Buss and Kolton Thoene as well as some crucial bonus points for major decisions had the momentum rolling in favor of the Longhorns as wins from Kason Larson, Cy Feeken, Tysen Welton and Brody Jensen sealed the deal. All team members contributed to the win with wonderful effort and successes throughout the day. Cale Buss notched his 150th career victory at the Buffalo County tournament to put icing on the cake.
Burwell won the State Dual Championship in 2018 as well.
