Ronda Weber, the Technology Coordinator for Burwell Public Schools, recently received a grant from the Weverka Learning Academy for a technology learning center. The grant was used to purchase distance learning digital equipment that can be utilized by K-12 students as well as community members for things such as college credit classes, continuing education, meetings with individuals at other locations and a variety of other learning opportunities. One permanent digital learning center will be located in the Burwell High School Media Center and another will be on a traveling cart.
Distance learning enhances student learning by offering opportunities to students and community members. They can graduate from high school with college credits, take courses that would otherwise not be available in a rural school district (such as Astronomy), attend virtual field trips, or attend meetings without the expense and time of traveling hundreds of miles.
The grant was possible because of an endowed gift from the estate of Mary Lou Weverka, a graduate of Burwell High School and a former teacher. The endowment was to be used to provide “educational opportunities” to Burwell students so the Weverka Learning Academy was established in 2019 to fund sustainable projects for students. All Burwell Public Schools teachers, staff and administrators were eligible to apply for the grants which were awarded from the Calamus Area Community Fund Advisory Board in March.
