Burwell Wins 2025 NSAA Class D State Wrestling Championship
February 23, 2025
The Burwell Longhorn wrestling squad nailed down the 2025 Class D State Wrestling Championship with seven qualifiers and five medalists. Class D was a very tight team race and the Longhorns ended up besting the Runner-Up team of Central Valley by just 14 points.
Sophomore duo Brody Jensen (113) and Drew Dawe (132) brought home a pair of gold medals for the Horns. Austin Mayfield (fourth, 138), Trentin Brown (third, 157) and Cale Buss (third, 190) were the other medalists for the Longhorns. Ora Chaffin and Cort Buss ended their great seasons by qualifying for the state tournament as well. The entire team contributed to the win with their hard work and dedication in the practice room and at tournaments. The Longhorns also brought home the 2025 NSAA Class D State Dual Championship.
Co-Head Coach Evan Gideon said winning both the state duals and the state tournament was a goal set by the Longhorns. They last won both in 2018.
“We set the bar high every year because that’s what tradition does,” Gideon said. “These guys have watched the older generations do it so this is nothing new to these kids. Now they got their turn.
“I hope this weekend is a testimony of who they are and what they’ve done in life. When they put their mind to something, they can do it, no matter what it is.”
The team was welcomed home by the community on Sunday as the Burwell Volunteer Fire Department led them into town and around the town square as fans cheered them on.
