Burwell Jr. Sr. High school is fortunate to have five foreign exchange students join the student body this school year. Julia Nielsen, Merle Dibbert, Germana Molinari, Carl Borglund, and Sonthaya Mingkwan (Mix) were welcomed in August.

Julia Nielson, from Sweden, is living with the Jen and Dave Busch family.  She is an 18 year old senior at Burwell and is also a senior in Sweden.  Julia lives with her dad, mom, and a younger brother in Sweden.  In Sweden, Julia plays handball and soccer, and at Burwell she is playing volleyball and is planning on trying basketball and track, as well.  When asked what she likes about America, Julia replied “All the new people I’ve met, and playing volleyball.”  Her favorite food is pepperoni pizza and favorite class is journalism.  Julia’s favorite thing about Burwell Jr. Sr. High School is the school spirit, homecoming, the sports games, and the friendly students and staff.

Merle Dibbert, from Germany, is living with the Ryan and Tenise Jarecke family.  Merle is sixteen years old and is a senior here at Burwell.  In Germany, Merle would be a junior.   Her family includes her mom, dad, and older brother.  Merle plays handball in Germany, and plays volleyball in Burwell.  She is going to go out for basketball and track too.  Merle’s favorite food is Sandstone’s Chicken Alfredo.  Her favorite thing about America is the food and the differences between Germany and the United States.  One thing she likes about Burwell Jr. Sr. High School is that there isn’t just one sport the whole year.  Merle’s favorite class would have to be weight training.

Germana Molinari is from Italy and is living with the Jay and Val Galvan family.  Germana is a senior here at BHS and is sixteen.  In Italy, she would be considered a fourth year, since they have five years of high school.  Her family includes her mom, dad, older brother and younger sister.  Germana’s favorite thing about America is the friendly people and her favorite food would be Rachelle’s cakes.  Germana is playing volleyball and plans on basketball and track.  She loves that BHS has school spirit and lockers!  Her favorite class is weight training.

Carl Borglund, 17, comes from Sweden.  His family consists of his dad, mom, and older brother.  His host family is the Dave and Kris Owen family.  Carl’s favorite American food is a hamburger, and his favorite thing about America is that the people are friendly and he enjoys the food.  Carl is a senior at Burwell, but considered second year gymnasium in Sweden which is like a junior.  Gymnasium is like a prep school for college.  Some things he likes about BHS are that it’s easier and he likes the sports.  In Sweden, Carl plays soccer, tennis, and handball.  He plays football for Burwell and plans on trying basketball as well.  His favorite class is weight training.

Sonthaya Mingkwan (Mix) is from Thailand and is 16.  Mix is living with the Shelli Spencer family.  In Thailand, Mix has a younger sister, mom, dad, and grandma living with him.  His favorite things about America are the sports and cheeseburgers.  Mix is a junior in Thailand and a senior here at Burwell.  He plays soccer, baseball, basketball, and ping pong in Thailand.  Mix plays football for the Longhorns and will be going out for basketball and track.  Mix’s favorite class would be trigonometry and he likes that we have lockers here.
