Grading & Classroom Procedures

Welcome to 1st grade!   I feel that it is important to have an open line of communication between home and school so I want to give you an overview of the expectations for this year so that we might get started off on the "right foot."
All of my students are here to learn.  It is my job to offer them the necessary information and an array of tools with  which to learn.  I will offer many avenues of opportunity for my students to grow both academically and socially this year.  I ask only that each and everyone offers his/her best effort and attitude while they are here.
Please feel free to come in and visit our classroom at any time.  I am usually available before or after school, or if you need, we can prearrange a time for a conference.  Communication between home and school is vital for your child's best educational opportunities, so don't hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or concerns.  I am looking forward to an exciting year.

ASSIGNMENTS:

All daily assignments will be written on our assignment board in our room each day, and students will be asked to check it over before leaving at the end of the day.  Assignments are the students' responsibility, therefore they will not be allowed to call home to have someone bring their assignment to school.

LATE WORK:
Responsibility for completing assignments on time is imperative in my classroom; therefore all homework will be expected to be handed in as completed or first thing the following morning.   Should there be some reason that your child cannot complete his/her homework on time due to an emergency or illness, please send a note making me aware of this so we can give your child some extra make-up time.  If your child has been ill, s/he will be given time to do the makeup work.

GRADING/HOMEWORK FOLDERS

Students' papers will be scored using the school-wide grading policy.  (94-100/A, 86-93/B, 79-85/C, 70-77/D, below 70/F) All graded work will be returned and gone over with your child in a timely manner.   A student's math grade will be based on 20% daily homework, and 80% test grades.  He/she will have a red folder in which to keep their homework papers to be returned to school and their graded papers when they are returned.  At the end of each day it will be taken home.  Please ask to see your child's papers each day so you are aware of what is going on with him/her.  This is also a great place to jot me a note if you have a concern.

MID-TERM REPORTS/PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
Grades will be reported to parents midway through each quarter via a hard copy being sent home with your child.   Parent-teacher conferences will be held at the first and third quarters.  Please make every effort to attend the conferences so your child's progress can be discussed.

On-line access to your child's grades will be available to all parents and students through our school website.  Please use this tool to check on your child's progress weekly.  You may also check on the books your child has tested on for AR.  This is a great tool for school-home communication and I hope you will find it very useful.  Please let me know if you encounter any problems with the address or your child's password.
