BHS Art Students Travel to Omaha

December 02, 2019

Art Students Travel to Omaha
On Thursday, November 21st, the Burwell High School Art Club took a trip to Omaha. Twelve students went to visit the University of Nebraska at Omaha in the morning and the Joslyn Art Museum in the afternoon.
At UNO, the students were given a presentation over basic knowledge they need to know about their college, such as: their scholarship program, tuition, housing, and information about the campus and Omaha. We then went on a tour of Dodge Campus, the north campus of UNO. We stopped and toured through many of the buildings on campus, including: Weber Fine Arts Building, Eppley Administration Building, Criss Library, Milo Bail Student Center, College of Public Affairs & Community Service, and Health & Kinesiology Wellness Center. Students were, also, given a peek into college life when they were able to view the apartment –style dorms that UNO offers.
After a quick lunch, we went on a self-guided tour at the Joslyn Art Museum. Students journeyed through the galleries and collections of paintings and sculptures that spans the timeframe of 700 B.C. all the the way to modern/ contemporary artwork. The Joslyn Art Museum hosts temporary rotating special exhibitions based around a certain body or them of artwork. The featured exhibition on display for months of October, November, and December is Word and Image: The St. John’s Bible. St. John’s Abbey and University commissioned famous calligrapher, Donald Jackson, to hand write and create an illuminated Bible. This project was started in 1998 with a team of artists from Wales and a group of scholars from central Minnesota that rewrote the entire Bible in calligraphy. Along with the written words, they created illustrations with ink, powered pigments for color, gold leaf, stencils, and stamps on vellum paper.
Students loved taking the time to explore a college and seeing famous artworks in person, making this a successful day!
