Petersen Lumber Company Gives Back

April 14, 2019

Petersen Lumber Company came to Burwell in 1974.  The Petersen family had been in the lumber business since 1885 and they saw a lot of promise in the Burwell community.  Over their forty-three years in the Burwell community they had chance to see a lot of changes in the community.  In December 2017, Petersen Lumber was sold to Carhart Lumber.  To show their appreciation for the forty-three great years, they decided to offer a scholarship for a student who was going into the construction field.  Four $2500 scholarships will be awarded over the next couple of years.

The first recipient is Grady Weber.  Grady has applied and been accepted to the Electrical Technology program at Central Community College in Hastings for the fall of 2019.  Grady’s first goal is to receive his degree in Electrical Technology, but would also like to continue his education in Building Construction while there.  Grady enjoys things that are hands-on and  knows there is a great demand for tradespeople in rural Nebraska.  Another goal is to utilize the resources and professionals at college to help him to receive the certifications and apprenticeships needed to continue his career. Grady has already completed twelve college credit hours while in high school, so he hopes to have time to work for an electrical contractor while he is attending school in Hastings so that he can gain valuable experience. Eventually, Grady hopes to own an electrical contracting business in Burwell or another rural Nebraska community.

Grady works full-time for a local construction company, Gaukel Construction in Burwell, in the summer and part-time during the school year. Grady is currently participating in a work release program through Burwell High School that allows him to have on-the-job work experience with Gaukel Construction during the school day. Grady’s job with Gaukel Construction has allowed him to have experience in all aspects of construction, from framing to roofing and everything in between.

The Petersen Lumber Company Scholarship is our way of giving back to the Burwell community and to show our appreciation for all the hardworking people we did business with over the years.
