Burwell 2018 Play Production

Students from Burwell High School will be performing Richard Orloff’s play “Vietnam 101: The War on Campus” for the 2018 play season.  This play is produced with special permission from Play Scrip’s INC. The play follows the lives of college students at Oberlin college in Ohio from a period of 1964-1970 and highlights the college community's journey during the Vietnam War years. “Vietnam 101: The War on Campus” is a documentary theater piece based on recollections of over one hundred students at Oberlin College.  Parts of the play recreates a time when people were asking the same questions that are being asked today about our government and our responsibilities. Different scenes in the play are a combination of monologues as well as traditional theater scenes that cover the milestones of Lyndon Johnson's promise not to expand the war, the early, well-behaved protests, and up to Kent State when the entire campus shut down.

In the summer of 2018 Candace Cain, Burwell’s head play production coach, contacted play  writer Richard Orloff to gain permission for a special thirty minute cutting of the two  hour long play. Cain and Emily Heerten worked together on this special adaptation as a way to bring a chapter of our country’s history to life.
