Longhorn Wrestling Receives Honors at State Banquet

June 14, 2018

Burwell Longhorn Wrestling fans had a lot to celebrate in 2018.  With a state championship at the NSAA State Wrestling Championships and the NSAA State Dual Championships under their belt, the Longhorns continue to rack up honors.

At the Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association Banquet on June 8th, 2018 and Boarders Inn and Suites Burwell brought home several honors.  Co-Head Coaches Luke Gideon and Mike Max received the Class D Vern Ekfelt Coach of the Year award as well as plaques for the 2018 Individual State Championship team and 2018 State Dual Championship team.

Ryan Dawe, a 2018 graduate of Burwell High School and an outstanding Longhorn wrestler, was honored with the Class D Pinnacle Bank scholarship.  He was selected from numerous applications based on GPA, letters of recommendation, and nominations from high school coaches.

Lesa Gideon was awarded the NSWCA Coaches Wife of the Year award.  Lesa spends immeasurable hours caring for wrestling team members, organizing fundraisers, and traveling to wrestling camps as an adult sponsor.  Lesa is also an RN and is the school nurse at Burwell Public Schools.

To top off the evening, Dr. Hugh Holmquist, owner of the Burwell Family Practice Medical Clinic in Burwell, was recognized as the NSWCA Patron of the Year.  A former Longhorn wrestler himself, Dr. Holmquist provides unwavering support to the local team.  He attends to the health needs of the Longhorn wrestlers and unselfishly gives his time at practice and meets.
