Burwell FCCLA to Send Six to State in STAR

Members from the Burwell FCCLA chapter traveled 2016 STAR events contest on January 27th in Ainsworth.  Start events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation.  The Burwell Chapter had the highest percent of chapter members in STAR in the district with 83% and Burwell was the runner-up  senior high chapter. 

Those winning district championships and advancing to state with gold awards are: Mary Sweesey and Ryne Sweesey in Interpersonal Communication-Junior,  Shayley Phillips in Career Investigation SR,  Katie Moeckl and Alexis Reinwald in Chapter Service Portfolio-Senior and Mikayla Zulkoski in Recycle and Redesign Sr.

Those named district runner-up and winning golds were: Brooke Eddy and Elizabeth Sears - Family Challenges and Issues- Senior.  Samantha O’Neal was a district runner up with a silver in Environmental Ambassador Sr.

Those winning golds were: Karlee McBride in Illustrated Talk Jr. and Bryanna Izaguirre in Recycle and Redesign

Those winning silvers were: Jack Taylor in Job Interview, Brittany Rocheleau and Miranda Worden in Interpersonal Communication-Senior, Emilee Taylor Nebraska Consumber Issues JR., Emily Sartain and Celie Packard in Illustrated Talk Sr., Deklan Svoboda, Brenna Gurney, and Lyda Elliott in Nebraska Health and Wellness Sr., and  Olivia Vore, and Hanna Simon and Breanna Rocheleau in Nebraska Family Challenges and Issues Jr.  Jacob Bush was give a bronze award for his Nebraska Health and Wellness Jr.

A special thank you to Maureen Sartain, Jen McBride, and Kris Zulkoski who served as judges for the contest.   Chapter advisor, Candace Cain ran tabulation for the contest.  Thank you also to all the chapter parents who attended and also helped with projects. 

 

School Wide Poetry Contest

Burwell High School had its school wide contest on January 28. Each class had 3-4 students advance to the school wide contest. Thirty students were in the contest and shared two poems each. Awards were given for places 1st -6th. The first place winner will advance to the regional contest in Kearney on February 7th at 2pm to be held at the Museum of Nebraska Art.   The results are: 1st- Jessica Michalski, 2nd Victory Sikes, 3rd Shea Jeffres , 4th Chase Hoffschneider , 5th Tyrell Smith, and  6th Samantha O'Neal.  Honor awards were given to Heidi Mann and Lorenzo Dugnani.  Well done to all the students who were in the school wide contest. 

 

Poetry Out Loud is a National Recitation Contest. Created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud is administered in partnership with the State Arts Agencies of all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Students had to memorized two poems for the contest.

Novice Team Speech Champions

The Burwell speech team was named the Novice team champion out of 22 schools at the Ord speech meet on January 30th. The varsity team was 4th over all out of 22 schools. Meet champions in novice were Emma Hoffschneider in humorous, Lorenzo Dugnani in serious, Lorenzo Dugnani  and Katie Moeckl in duet improve, and Cadyn Owen in extemp. Novice medal winner were: Weston Svoboda 2nd in Persuasive and 4th in poetry, Sage Konicek 6th in poetry, Logan Simpson 4th in persuasive, Carlee Archibeque 4th in informative, Katie Moeckl 4th in entertainment. Varsity medal winners were: Megan Ono 5th in extemp, Chase Hoffschneider 7th in extemp, Breanna Dawe 3rd in informative, Mikayla Zulkoski and Jessica Michalski  3rd in duet and 4th in improve duet, and Megan Ono, John Holloway, and Mikayla Zulkoski 2nd in OID. Superior performances were given by: Tyrell Smith in poetry, Samantha O’Neal in entertainment and serious,  Breanna Gurney in poetry, Micheala Kelly in poetry, Jessica Michalski in serious, Chase Hoffschneider in poetry, and Elizabeth Sears in serious.
